TRACSŪ Demo Installation & Guided Tour |
To install the TRACSŪ For DOS demo onto your hard drive, you must have
If you downloaded the demo software from the web site, change to the directory where you have downloaded the files. At the DOS prompt type:
install <Enter>
To install the demo software from diskette, log onto the drive where the diskette is
located. For example, to install from drive A:
type:
A: <Enter> install <Enter>
INSTALL.EXE will create a directory on the destination hard drive called C:\demo. Please note, if the specified directory already exists, INSTALL.EXE will not prompt you with any warning messages! Any TRACSŪ data files in the destination directory will be overwritten by INSTALL.EXE.
You will be prompted to change your CONFIG.SYS file. If you permit changes to your CONFIG.SYS file, the original file is renamed CONFIG.BAK. The install program checks for the existence of the BUFFERS and FILES statements and edits or creates them as necessary setting FILES to 55 and BUFFERS to 40.
After installing the TRACSŪ For DOS demo you should reboot your computer if you have elected to make changes to the CONFIG.SYS file by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del.
To begin the TRACSŪ demo, change to the demo directory by typing:
cd \demo <Enter> demo <Enter>
A menu bar is located across the top of the screen with various options listed, some with additional options available from a drop down menu. You may go to any option by pressing the ALT key and the first letter of the menu bar option. For example, pressing ALT-F highlights the "File" keyword and displays its drop down menu listing all the main data base files.
Reading the "Help" text from the menu bar provides an overview of the TRACSŪ system and the data base files. The list of hot keys in each mode are also available through the "Help" menu bar. Alternatively, you may press ALT-K to view the operative hot keys for your current mode. Hot keys may vary from mode to mode so it is a good idea to review them until you become familiar with the system.
To delete a record from a data base file, press ALT-X and confirm the delete.
Follow this sample data base entry to get a quick tour of some of the features available in the TRACSŪ For DOS system.
You will notice that upon entering the TRACSŪ system, the "File" menu bar option is highlighted. This is a good place to start so press ENTER. From the drop down menu press "E" for Enclosure. (Typing the first letter of a menu option will automatically highlight the first menu item beginning with that letter or you can use the up and down arrows to move the highlight bar.) Press ENTER
Since there are no records in the Enclosure data base file, the cursor is placed at the Id field and you are prompted to add an enclosure record. Type CASTLE and press ENTER. An enclosure named "CASTLE" has just been added to the data base. Fill in information on the screen to describe the castle. Once you have completed this screen, press ALT-M for the "More" menu option and go to "Inhabitants". We will add to the Specimen data base by creating inhabitants for the CASTLE.
Press F2 to add the WICKED QUEEN. When you come to the Species field, you can begin building a species file. Hit any key to get the Species Table pop up window. Press F2 and add the scientific name "Malicious Regina" and the common name "Cruella Deville". A maximum of three alphabetic words are allowed for the scientific name providing for genus, species and subspecies. The scientific name is automatically edited to capitalize the genus while the species and subspecies are lower case. After all inhabitant fields are filled, you will be prompted to either add the WICKED QUEEN to the specimen file or to cancel this transaction since all inhabitants must be in the specimen file. Add the WICKED QUEEN to the specimen file.
Move the highlight bar to WICKED QUEEN and press ALT-Z to zoom on that specimen's record. The zoom feature allows you to quickly check on important information in the record without losing your place in the current data base. Return to the inhabitants window and press F2 again to add SNOW WHITE, scientific name "Nevada blanca", common name "Apple Annie". Return to File Edit Mode by pressing ESC.
To add another enclosure record, press ALT-A and type COTTAGE at the Id prompt. Go to the inhabitants window again and add some dwarfs. We know that SNOW WHITE got lost in the forest and took up residence in the dwarve's COTTAGE so let's put SNOW WHITE in the COTTAGE enclosure. Press F2 to add a new inhabitant. While specimen field is highlighted press F1 for some help. A pop up window lists all the current specimens in your data base. Move the highlight bar to SNOW WHITE and <Enter>. SNOW WHITE is now a COTTAGE inhabitant. You can check this by zooming (ALT-Z) on SNOW WHITE to see that the Enclosure Id in her specimen record has changed.
Let's make some notes in SNOW WHITE's notepad. You can get to SNOW WHITE's specimen record by either escaping from the Inhabitants window, selecting the File menu bar option, choosing Specimen file and paging through the file until you get to SNOW WHITE or you can highlight SNOW WHITE from the Inhabitants window and press ALT-G to "goto" SNOW WHITE's specimen record. Now when you select the "More" menu bar option, a different list is displayed. These lists vary depending on the data base file in which you are currently located. Go to the Notepad option. Cursor through the Query Window prompts to get to the Notes and Observations Window and press F2.
Enter a date and type "MV" in the code field. Since code MV (for move) has not been defined, the Code window is displayed. Normally, you may select an existing code or add one at this time. Since there are no codes, we must add MV and a description. After adding code MV press enter. MV is automatically placed in the code field and the note field is highlighted.
Before typing in the note field, press ALT-K to view the operative hot keys. To save and exit the note field you must press Ctrl-W for "Write". The first line of the note field is the one displayed when you are scrolling through all the notes. Try to make those first few words meaningful so that you can easily see what the note is about. Now type "Moved to COTTAGE - lost in forest. Went out with woodsman and got separated. After wandering around a bit, she stumbled on a cottage where she made herself at home." Press Ctrl-W. Return to the main specimen profile screen.
After a few months, SNOW WHITE had twins. We can record this happy event by going to the Clutch file. Go the File menu bar option and select the Clutch file. Add clutch TWINS. From the More drop down menu select Hatchlings. We can now add FRICK and FRACK. You will be asked if you want to add little FRICK and FRACK to the current specimen data base. SNOW WHITE is keeping FRICK so add him. Little FRACK went to live with an uncle so we will just record his birth here.
This Guided Tour was designed to provide you with a very brief overview of a few of the major features contained in the software. You are encouraged to explore TRACSŪ to identify all the features which can be useful in your breeding program. Help is available throughout the system, so use the F1 key liberally to assist you in understanding all that TRACSŪ has to offer. Since this is a demo, a limit has been placed on the number of records that can be added to certain files. Of course, this limitation does not exist in the full TRACSŪ system.
